The history of windchimes (wind chimes) dates back to early man. in many cultures. However, the greatest and most elegant advances were made in the east and south Asia region. Extending from Bali to Tibet and Japan windchimes were first used on the temples. Buddhist attached thousands of windchimes, which were very ornate, from the eaves of the temple building. These windchimes would include bells and when the wind was blowing heavily they would produce an almost deafening sound.
In Asia and ancient Mediterranean the windchimes were used to attract benevolent spirits and chase away evil ones. In China and Japan windchimes became decorative art not only in their temples but in private homes and businesses as well. In the 19th and 20th centuries windchimes grew in popularity and spread more widely among the Western countries.
Many consider windchimes to bring good luck.
